Time to create shed loads of living space

- Lorraine Howard

At this time of year, as autumn creeps up on us, it’s the ideal time to think about winter storage for your garden.

The garden shed is a lot more than a humble hut full of dusty plant pots and webs; it can take centre-stage in your garden.

Sheds now come in a wide choice of styles and sizes, providing everything from basic garden storage to a touch of garden luxury with lights, heaters and comfy seating.

Even a compact potting shed comes with a rustic charm nowadays – trendy hanging racks, funky plant pots, personalised garden tools and miniature herb pots are all easily available in local stores, making your little shed the perfect gardener’s haven.

If your shed is purely for storage purposes then again there’s a whole host of sizes to suit your needs and budget.

Be sure to make the most of what you’ve got; metal shelving units can help you store smaller items (also making them easier to find) and tool or lawn-mower hanging hooks will make it not only safer but also leave you with more floor space to manoeuvre.

You can even buy bike hooks to stop them falling over once stored away, so think of all the spacesaving ways that will allow you to keep your shed tidy while still storing plenty of items.

Although if you want to use your shed as a place to relax, take up a hobby such as painting or crafts, then there are various sized summerhouses that are ideal for this.

They often have more windows to make the space bright and airy and so you can enjoy your garden while unwinding or maybe your teenage children could use it as a place to lounge with their friends - there are plenty of uses.

If you have younger children then you can also get wonderful kids’ ‘sheds’ or wooden playhouses where they can enjoy picnic-style lunches or tea parties, or maybe it’ll be a pirate cave or cowboy ranch.

Children will make even the most basic wooden playhouse a fabulous place to play and have fun.

Plus they’re ideal for storing all those outdoor toys.

So, whether you want a simple shed where you can tend to your garden or a luxury summerhouse where you can read a book, there’s an extensive choice of sheds available that offer you extra living space and can become an extension of your home.
