Primary school praised for global outlook
Muthill Primary School has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.
The accolade is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas.
Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is described as being at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.
The British Council praised the quality of international projects Muthill Primary School has been involved in.
These include creating a collaborative song and dance about children’s rights with their partner school in Ghana and film-making with their French partner school in order to promote language and cultural learning.
Muthill’s International Schools coordinator, Keri Reid, was also commended for her ambassadorial role with the British Council,
On hearing the news that Muthill Primary had received the award, Keri said: “We are all delighted to have regained full International Schools status.
“Our learning projects have allowed us to embed an international dimension into the curriculum quite naturally, using inter-disciplinary approaches.
“Much of our work incorporates elements of sustainable education and children’s rights too – providing real and meaningful contexts for children to learn about global citizenship.”
John Rolfe, from the British Council, said: “The school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned this prestigious award.
“The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms.
“Adding an international dimension to children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful future careers in an increasingly global economy.”
Keri is also working towards reaccreditation of the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Professional Recognition in Global Citizenship programme.
