Sportswoman Gemma encourages girls

- Alex Attewell

Members of 4th Crieff Brownies, as well as Rainbows, Guides and their leaders, enjoyed an afternoon tea with a difference last week.

Among the guests at Crieff’s St Andrews Hall on Wednesday was wheelchair basketball and rugby player Gemma Lumsdaine.

Gemma, who has cerebral palsy, represented Scotland in the Sainsbury’s School Games from 2013-2015 and hopes to compete in the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Her visit was arranged as part of Girl Guiding Scotland’s Inspirational Women campaign, an effort to make Guides, Brownies and Rainbows feel inspired by positive role models.

It also took place during Women In Sport Week and will be used as part of the work needed for the Brownies to achieve their Challenge badges.

Gemma, a keen activist/ambassador for disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz, told the 25 or so people gathered to always try their best and follow their dreams.

Brown Owl leader Kelly Duguid, who organised the visit, thanked Gemma for coming along.

She added: “I think the girls took a lot from it – they kept saying ‘wow’ when I asked them what they thought – and it’s good for them to hear a positive role model like Gemma say to follow their dreams.”

After the event, Gemma posted on social media saying she had a “lovely afternoon telling them all about disability sport”.
