-

After their recent advance it was reported “The Italians have held all their gains from Gorizia to the sea against repeated enemy attacks and have won further important successes.

In Saturday’s official bulletin it is stated that 553 prisoners were taken, together with a whole battery of 105mm howitzers.

“The total number of prisoners made in four days amounts to 8962, including 280 officers. On the Julian front since the offensive began on 6th August, the Italian have captured over 40,000 prisoners.

“This latest thrust in the direction of Trieste has given the Italians possession of some vital points in the Carso defences.”

Meanwhile, two years after its outbreak, there was a reminder that the effects of the Great War, begun by a European power struggle, was having its effects far outwith the continent.

“Severe fighting of a somewhat confused type has been in progress in East Africa.

“A small detachment of Rhodesian Native Police was ambushed by enemy forces and suffered heavily, and Colonel Baxendale was wounded and captured.

“At the hands of our forces a strong German force was in turn ambushed, the German commander being also wounded and captured.

“East of Lupembe our troops rushed enemy positions with complete success driving the German troops across the river Ruhudje, with losses estimated at 200, 82 prisoners being taken.
