Theatre production is likely to stir memories
Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s autumn production is a wonderfully light-hearted musical rendering of Neil Munro’s collection of stories of Para Handy and his shifty crew manoeuvring their way along the West Coast of Scotland during the early years in the 20th Century ... writes Mike Boxer.
For many, there will be recollections of the TV series while more senior members of the audience may also have recalled an older film version – both of which were much enjoyed at the time.
However, today’s cast are equally entertaining – acting out the various escapades the crew of the Vital Spark find themselves in.
The creation of the faithful old puffer tied up in harbour on the stage gives a wonderful platform and backdrop to the events allowing the musical talents of the cast to create a lively atmosphere.
This version of events is written by John Bett and skilfully directed by Liz Carruthers, with musical direction by John Beales.
Keith Fleming (Para Handy), Stephen Clyde (Macphail) Harry Ward (Dougie) and Scott Gilmour (Sunny Jim) recreate the favourite characters, ably assisted by Chris Forbes, Kirsty McDuff, Clare Waugh and Wendy Weatherby – who act out the other characters as well as providing the delightful musical accompaniment.
Sadly, this short run only lasts until November 13.
The pre-christmas production is Scrooge The Musical, from December 2-23.
