Fall of Romanian capital announced by officials

-

A Berlin official message announced the fall of Bucharest.

The statement was issued by the Romanian Government.

It read: “When the Romanian resistance was broken in the great battle of the Arges on Sunday, it became clear that the occupation of the city by the enemy was not far distant, despite the gallant and momentarily successful effort of the Romanian troops and the Russians to the south-west of Bucharest.

“While another capital has passed into the hands of the enemy, there is nothing to show that he has made large captures of men and guns, and it appears the Romanian armies have made a successful retreat.”

However, the Germans were claiming the capture of over 17,000 prisoners.

Elsewhere after several days of heavy fighting the Serbians had captured a series of strongly fortified Bulgarian positions, taking many prisoners, war material and five field guns.

Meanwhile in Athens a combined British, French and Italian force marched into a carefully prepared trap in Athens and found itself surrounded.

“The Allies have taken a definite step to deal with the Greek situation. A blockade of Greece will be maintained until adequate reparation is furnished for the recent outrages committed against the Allies in Athens.”

Britain continued to defeat the enemy in East Africa and Egypt.
