50 YEARS AGO Society goes against its name over holiday

-

Crieff Co- operative Society would not co- operate with Crieff Tourist Association and was going to open on the February holiday.

Last year, the unco-operative society and two other local shops had remained open on this new holiday - the only one to coincide with the half-term holidays of Morrison’s Academy and Crieff Secondary School.

By a narrow majority the annual general meeting of the tourist association defeated a proposal to drop the additional holiday, scheduled for February 13.

They also agreed that in addition to the Burgh’s statutory holidays, fixed for March 27 and September 4, they would observe May 1 and October 16 as holidays.

Complaints about the Town Council fixing a date in September as a statutory holiday were made by several shopkeepers who wanted to see dates chosen that were outwith the tourist season.

Elsewhere, it was reported that 43 apartment houses were to be built at a cost of £ 135,901 as the first phase of Crieff Town Council’s Hollybush scheme. Work was expected to begin in the spring.

And Bailie Rae was causing controversy when he stated at a council meeting discussing ways to improve James Square: “I would suggest the place would have a more enhanced look if, instead of destroying the trees, the fountain monstrosity were removed to some point in one of the parks.”
