Round Table spread festive cheer in Strath
50 YEARS AGO
Sir Alec Douglas- Home, KT, MP, visited the local sorting office where he saw the first mail of the last-minute Christmas rush being sorted, franked and despatched.
He was accompanied by Lady Home - who took a great interest in the proceedings - by Provost Wishart and by John Robertson, Constituency Agent.
Sir Alec was amused by one card, which had a somewhat vague and unusual address - “Mrs ..., next door to the police Station, Comrie.”
He was assured by Post Office officials that the card, which had been posted in Crieff, would be delivered.
And a community-spirited group, which is still doing good work today, were also making deliveries.
The Herald reported: “Members of Crieff Round Table, together with the help this year of several local young men, made deliveries of bags of logs to old folk in the town.
“The logs had been previously cut by Tablers at the Gargunnock sawmill of Eddie Cramb, and transported to Crieff under their own transport.
“For several years now, the Table have also provided kindling but this year the job was undertaken by the lads of the Eric Liddell Club.”
More than 130 old folk in the Strath capital received two bags of logs with the compliments of the Round Table and Scott Cramb and his friends.
