Walkers warned of weather danger
Local MSP Liz Smith urged munro-baggers to consult avalanche advice and the Mountain Weather Information Service before heading out.
Last year was one of the deadliest on Scotland’s hills, with several fatalities as a result of adverse weather, avalanches and other issues. Even the most capable of climbers can be caught out and Ms Smith believes it is important that everyone is aware of the dangers and how best to prepare.
After campaigning last year to ensure the continuance of the Mountain Weather Information Service, Ms Smith believes it is imperative that climbers consult their advice prior to heading out. She also said it important that avalanche warnings and forecasts are checked before starting a climb.
Keen walker Ms Smith said: “As someone who has climbed all of Scotland’s munros, I know just how dangerous they can be, particularly in winter.
“Last year was a tragic one on Scotland’s hills, with far too many lives lost. It’s therefore important that climbers are aware of the support and information out there that can help guide their climb.
“The Mountain Weather Information Service and the Scottish Avalanche Information Service do a fantastic job in providing accurate and reliable information as to the conditions on Scotland’s hills. I would urge all climbers to consult it before heading out.”
