Motorist fined £5 for James Sq disruption

-

A motorist, whose car had caused an obstruction in James Square, was fined five pounds at Crieff Burgh Court.

The driver from Leeds had caused a traffic hold up after he parked his car on the carriageway near to the Burgh Chambers. Local bobbies moved the car and 45 minutes later the accused turned up at the police station looking for his missing vehicle. His defence was that he was a stranger to the area and had just parked beside all the rest.

And, as the paper was rolling off the printing press, Perth County Council’s Roads Committee was considering what to do about Strowan Bridge.

Following a report in the Herald about the committee’s rejection of an offer by Strowan Estate to build a new road bypassing the old bridge, members had suspended Standing Orders to reconsider their decision. The Clerk and the County Surveyor had since met with Major Cox of Strowan House to obtain full details of his proposals but would not disclose what had been said nor what, if any, decision had been taken.

Major Cox had also arranged a petition, which had been signed by 114 local residents, doctors, vets and those engaged in local deliveries, urging the committee to reconsider its decision to demolish and replace the old bridge and accept Strowan Estate’s alternative offer. The Estate was prepared to meet any expense involved in resiting the new bridge so that the overall cost to the local authority would be no more than if it proceeded with its scheme to do away with the old bridge.
