Our modern library is more than books

- Lynn Duke

A community open day at Strathearn Community Library on Saturday morning was a huge success.

Culture Perth and Kinross, the new trust responsible for museum and library services across the area, invited Strath residents to “jump into their local library and explore, enjoy and connect”.

A community choir formed for the day provided a delightful musical backdrop as visitors explored what the modern day library has to offer.

Free health tests from Live Active Leisure, book crafts with Re-Make and help to research family trees were available on the day as well as information on the forthcoming science and railway festivals due to take place in the Strath capital.

Crieff Arts Festival volunteers were also on hand to teach people to knit and crochet poppies in support of Crieff Remembers’ First World War commemorations this summer.

The next local open days to highlight why libraries are not just about books will be held at Comrie Library on Saturday, March 11, and Auchterarder Library on Saturday, March 18.

Following the Crieff event, Strathearn Community Library assistant Janice Bourelle told the Herald: “We had 250 heads through the door on Saturday, which is a real boost to our regular Saturday figures.

“We had a lot of positive comments. People felt that it was a very sociable morning and they enjoyed the friendly atmosphere.

“Although some of the people were regular users of the library, they weren’t aware of everything we offered, such as Strathearn Heralds dating back to 1856, our e-resources and some of our family resources such as our themed lapsacs.

“One person came along to knit poppies who hadn’t been to our library before. She was amazed by all that the library offered.

“Our thanks must go to all our partners who helped to make the day a success.”
