Heavy German losses inflicted north of Arras
North of the Ancre on Saturday night the British troops attacked and captured on a front of more than three-quarters of a mile, a strong system of trenches at the southern foot of the Serre Hill.
The Allies took 315 prisoners, a total considerably exceeding the number of casualties.
Further progress in the same area was made on Sunday night, when some 650 yards of the enemy’s trenches in the neighbourhood of the Beaucourt-Puisieux road were occupied, and a few prisoners taken.
There has also been much air activity in the west and Army aviators have considerably damaged an enemy aerodrome. Naval airmen successfully attacked the German aerodrome at Ghistelles, West Flanders. A French pilot bombed the railway station and barracks at Karlesruhe, scoring hits. The usual air fights took place, Lieutenant Guynemar having brought down his 31st Boche machine.
On Wednesday, British troops captured an enemy strong point south-east of Grandcourt.
Heavy losses were inflicted on the Germans north of Arras and other places.
British naval aeroplanes made another successful attack on the harbour and shipping at Bruges.
In Mesopotamia, part of the Turkish forces have been surrounded by the British.
They are hemmed in in what is known as the Dagara Road, an angle which the winding Tigris forms to the west of the town.
