Fundraiser for Crieff civic chairs

- Lynn Duke

A bingo tea held at the RBLS Clubrooms in aid of the Crieff civic chairs project has raised £800.

The Strath capital’s 14 Burgh Chairs had been languishing in storage for years.

Originally used by the former Crieff Burgh Council, when they held their meetings in the upper floor of Crieff Town Hall, the chairs ended up in a basement once the venue stopped being used.

However, with the help of financial donations from local residents, the most impressive seat – the Provost’s Chair – was brought back to its former quality last year and is currently on display at Strathearn Community Library, and the remaining chairs are now securely wrapped and stored.

Former Crieff Community Councillor Marnie Gauld has taken up the cudgel to raise funds to restore the rest of the historic artefacts so that they can once again be used and has been organising a series of events.

The next goal is to reupholster the two Bailie chairs, which would originally have been positioned one on either side of the Provost’s chair at civic meetings.

Marnie said: “I’d like to thank all local businesses and individuals who donated towards the bingo tea, the people who helped and everyone who attended.

“A total of £800 was raised, which will renovate a Bailie chair and massively contribute to the other Bailie chair.”

The next fundraiser will be an Easter egg/ Bonnet competition in James Square on Saturday, April 15.
