Ornamental tiles to form‘legacy’wall

- Lynn Duke

I think these projects are a wonderful idea... In years to come people will be able to say, ‘I helped to create that’ Councillor Ann Cowan

St rath resident s a re contributing to a variety of community projects this month in support of the Perth 2021 City of Culture Bid.

Last Saturday more than 150 ornamental clay tiles were created for a legacy wall at the Strathearn Community Campus as part of the wider Creating Tomorrow’s History Today project.

And, this weekend, locals will use a variety of artistic methods to decorate a large wall- hanging for the Tryst lecture theatre at the campus.

This will be followed on March 22 by an opportunity to add a stitch to the commemorative embroidery being created for the Scottish Women’s Institute’s 100th anniversary.

The cultural and heritage activities will play their parts in creating lasting legacies for Strathearn, according to organisers.

Diane Porter, campus business development officer, said the tilemaking workshops had been a huge success.

She said: “There was a great turnout – with young and old all getting involved.

“The tiles that were produced were fantastic. They will give people a lot to talk about when they see the wall – local landmarks, shops, organisations and families were all depicted.

“Hopefully, the final wall will be put up in May in our new initiative the Living Room – a community space in the campus where we will welcome community groups.”

Strathearn councillor Ann Cowan and Christine Deeley, head of Strathearn Community Campus, were the first to paint part of the legacy wallhanging on Monday.

Mrs Deeley told the Herald: “I am delighted that we have been able to offer this opportunity to members of our community to take part in something that is not only a lot of fun but gives us a chance to discover artistic skills that we might not know we had and is going to give us something that is going to be very meaningful to our community in the future.

“We are very grateful to local artist June McEwan for all her support, enthusiasm, sense of fun and her vision that has made this happen for us all.”

Councillor Ann Cowan said: “I hope that everyone will do a bit of painting. I think these projects are a wonderful idea and such fun. I painted some of the sky.

“In years to come people will be able to say, ‘I helped to create that’.

“It would be marvellous for the area if Perth can get the 2021 City of Culture bid. It would bring a lot of people, a lot of money and goodwill to the area.”
