Government warning over sheep worrying

-

The Depatment of Agriculture and Fisheries was appealing to all dog owners living near country districts to take extra care to see that their dogs were kept under control by day and night. Owners of dogs which were found worrying sheep were liable to prosecution and would also be held liable for damages.

Meanwhile, if all the tenants of Crieff Town Council’s under-occupied houses were forced to change places with tenants of overcrowded houses, the housing waiting list could be cut by 10 to 15%, commented the Herald’s Editor.

Ten of the 132 names on the current waiting list were already council tenants awaiting a change to a more suitably sized house.

There were several houses in Crieff under-occupied by an older couple or a sole surviving parent whose family had grown up and left home.

“The arguments against decanting these people, according to their present needs are varied – the family could not return home at the weekend; the decanted tenant might have to sell some of his furniture if his new house was too small; it would be harsh to have to remove a widowed mother from the cherished memories of her husband and family. However, not one of these arguments nor others like them, is based on solid economic ground. If council tenants are prepared to accept the subsidised social service of cheap houses, surely they should also accept the social responsibility to make way for overcrowded families?”
