Medal haul at national meeting

- Rachel Clark

Two Auchterarder gymnasts are celebrating success at the national championships last weekend.

Lilly Roy and Isobel Findlay both came away with medals from the Scottish National Artistic Championships, held at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth.

Lilly won the Scottish espoir category for girls aged 12-13 on the vault.

This came on top of a bronze medal in the all-round competition, as well as making the finals in the bars, beam and floor.

Fellow Auchterarder Gymnastics Club member Isobel is in her first year competing at senior level and was making her debut at the nationals.

She qualified for the finals of the beam and the vault and won a bronze medal in the senior vault competition.

The club’s head coach Fiona Cameron said:“At training this week the whole club and the young gymnasts were in awe.

“It’s terrific because they look up to Lilly and Isobel so much.

“They have both worked so hard. They both train about 20 hours a week, five days a week. I think it is an amazing achievement for somewhere the small size of Auchterarder to produce two high-level gymnasts. It is quite remarkable.”

Fiona added:“I prepared them to do their best, but we were all quite surprised at how well they did.

“They are capable but it all came together on the day. They did a lot of preparation and did all the hard work. Everyone was just flabbergasted.

“We thought we would only make one final, not six. It is quite incredible.”

Lilly is aiming to qualify for the British Championships later this year.

Thirteen members of the Lang Toon club are heading to an invitational competition in Belgium over Easter.
