Farm visit feeds fertile minds

- Rachel Clark

Community School of Auchterarder pupils learned about farming as they took the classroom out into the countryside.

P3 youngsters visited Drumness Farm near the Lang Toon and were shown what day-to-day life is like by farmers Andrew and Sandy Bayne. This is the first farm visit members of the Bayne family have hosted.

The trip to the farm was organised by the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET), as part of its ongoing mission to give every school pupil in Scotland the opportunity to visit the outdoors and learn about food, farming and the countryside.

The Auchterarder children enjoyed seeing the animals on the farm and learning about them, including feeding the cows potatoes. They also watched the potato grader and tried their hand at the task themselves.

Farmer Andrew Bayne said: “It was great to have pupils from a local primary school on the farm and they had a real hunger to learn about where their food came from. We have enjoyed working with RHET and are proud that we are playing our part in educating the next generation about food, farming and the countryside.”

RHET’s project coordinator for Perth and Kinross, Dunning-baseed Alix Ritchie, said: “Drumness is a great venue for a farm visit as so many types of farming and food production are demonstrated on the farm.

“Children were able to learn about the production of a number of different types of foods including potatoes, carrots, swedes, lamb, beef, wheat, barley and oats.

“We are grateful to the Bayne family for taking time to welcome the pupils onto their farm at a busy time of year.”
