Crieff Drama take on a cheeky showbiz comedy

- Lynn Duke

Crieff Drama Group is deep into rehearsals for its outrageous April comedy, Wife After Death.

From the title, you might not imagine there would be much to laugh at, but it helps to know that the playwright is no less than Eric Chappell - the comic genius behind television classics Only When I Laugh and Rising Damp.

His quirky two-act comedy is an energetic and swiftly-paced story surrounding the demise of one Dave Thursby, a well-loved TV comedian whose passing turns out to have devastating effects on all who knew him best - or thought they did.

For Harvey Barrett, his scriptwriter, and his theatrical agent Kevin Prewitt, is this the end of showbiz life as they have known it? Not to mention their taken-forgranted income? Expect sparks to fly as colleagues, wives and strangers set to with raw energy as celebrity egos are ruthlessly and remorselessly demolished – albeit with elements of humour still very much present.

CDG chair Helen Day said:“The intriguing thing about Eric Chappell’s writing is that it swerves the obvious pitfalls of situation comedy cliches.

“There is always truth in his characters and with that comes more depth in the way they can be presented. It gives actors - and audiences - that much more to discover.”

Crieff Drama’s production will be staged from April 6-8, from 7.30pm in Morrison’s Academy Hall.

Doors and wine bar open at 7pm. Tickets are £6 and are available from Carnelian Crafts in Comrie Street, Crieff, or by phoning 01764 656375.
