Juniors take 1-2 at Gartmorn 6

- Sports reporter

Gartmorn near Alloa was invaded on Sunday by hordes of Harriers for the Gartmorn 6 and Junior Trail Races, organised by the Wee County Harriers.

For the seniors the Gartmorn 6 was the first championship race, with points at stake for the overall club championship.

The weather for this race can be challenging and there was heavy mud underfoot.

First Harrier home was Ben Murphy in an excellent time of 36.47, in sixth position overall.

Next Harrier in, with probably the performance of the day, was Maddy Watson in a time of 42.19, finishing as fifth woman.

Maddy improved on last year’s time in this race by five minutes.

Next in was Doug Flint, not far behind in 42.51.

Wendy Taylor pipped Andy Gallagher over the final stages to finish in 43.25 as ninth woman and fourth FV35.

Wendy Taylor ran the Gartmorn race the day after a 20-mile training run as she prepares for the London Marathon in April.

The third Harrier woman was Sonja McFadden, in 45.41, third FV45.

The race also saw a return to racing for former ladies’ captain Liz Mestecky, making her way back after a tough period of injuries.

With 16 juniors racing, the club had the best club representation in the junior two-mile race.

Levi Sweeney won the junior race in an excellent time of 12.38, with Duthac Mardon second in 13.04.

Ru Flint, in his first year in the U16 category, ran well to finish seventh overall.

At U13 James was the third boy, coming home in 11th position overall.

Elspeth was the third girl in the same age group.
