Pink lady says thanks to cancer testing unit
Comrie’s Myra Keith is urging Strath women to make use of the mobile breast screening units that come to the local health centres.
Women between the ages of 50 and 70 are offered appointments at their local test centres and last summer Myra was invited to the mammogram clinic when it visited Comrie Medical Centre.
She went along not even realising she had a lump and was surprised to be recalled and told she had breast cancer.
She explained to the Herald: “I went to my appointment at the unit and not long after got a letter to say I was being recalled.
“After further examination they removed a lump and then I had to have radiotherapy from Monday to Friday for three weeks.”
Myra is now in remission and will be checked annually.
Myra, her husband John and daughter Rosie thanked everyone who supported them throughout her illness.
Myra and Rosie decided to hold a Pink Lady day to thank Ninewells Hospital.
They invited friends to pinkthemed tea parties at their homes and raised £1400 for the radiotherapy unit.
The money will be used to help decorate a new CT room.
Myra thanked all the shops that donated raffle prizes, friends and family who helped, those who donated baking and everyone that gave a donation.”
Myra added: “If you get a mammogram appointment don’t ignore it. If I hadn’t attended the screening the lump would have got bigger.
“It’s good that the units come into the communities. I think less people would go for screening if they had to travel to Perth.
”For the short time you visit the clinic it could save your life.
“I was lucky. I didn’t feel ill, even throughout my treatment.”
