Villages could be in for £10,000 prize
Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, Liz Smith, is calling on villages across the Strath to put themselves forward to be named Village of the Year and win a grand prize of £10,000.
Channel 4 is making a programme presented by Penelope Keith that aims to uncover the country’s best village and a team of judges will be travelling the length and breadth of the UK to determine the winner this summer.
The competition is not just for picturesque villages but also for those that have a great sense of community and connection with local history and heritage.
The closing date for applications is May 14 and you can apply directly to voty@reeftv.com or visit www. villageoftheyear.co.uk.
Commenting, Madderty-based Conservative politician Ms Smith said:“Perth and Kinross is bursting full of small communities and villages that tick every box on the judges scorecard. I would encourage residents and community councils to get together and submit their application before the closing date in May in order to be in with a chance of scooping the £10,000 prize.
“With the recent success of the Great British Bake off, the Great British Sewing Bee and the Big Painting Challenge this new show could become a prime time favourite and offer the opportunity to showcase your village to the whole country on national television.
“Ultimately, it is the warmth of the people who make our small villages and communities incredible places to live and across the region there will be no shortage of possible candidates for the title of Britain’s Best Village and I would like to wish those entering the best of luck.”
