50 YEARS AGO New pasteurising plant in town centre

-

Sir Alec Douglas-Home congratulated Mr Andrew McCartney on his new pasteurising and bottling plant, when he officially pronounced the new Strathearn Dairy in Addison Terrace open.

The MP was welcomed by Mr McCartney, who showed him round the plant. Sir Alec took a keen interest in the various bits of machinery and later told the audience at a ceremony that he was very pleased to be there to see “this example of enterprise.”

“Here in the centre of Crieff,” he said, “you have one of the most modern dairy plants in Scotland. This is the most modern kind of up-to-date plant and that is exactly what we want to see.”

Two of the Milk Marketing Board’s “Pinta Girls” were at the dairy with a decorated pony and trap and presented a basket of produce to Lady DouglasHome. A large crowd, including new civic leader Provost Willing, attended the ceremony and were invited to see how their milk was pasteurised during the dairy’s open house.

Elsewhere, two police houses were to be built at Corlundy Crescent at a cost of £10,000.

Perth and Kinross Joint Police Committee was granted a building warrant at Crieff Dean of Guild Court for the two four-apartment houses and three garages. Also granted a warrant was Mrs Elizabeth Young of the Victoria Hotel, King Street, who was going to form a cocktail lounge out of a room beside the dining room in the hotel.
