-

Fewer crimes and offences were made known to the police in Perthshire during 1966 than during 1965 read a report.

For Crieff the drop was 11%, from 239 to 211, and in Auchterarder the figure decreased from 127 to 116- 11%.

For the whole county the drop was from 7596 to 7293- down 4%.

T he Chief Constable’s annual report for 1966 also revealed there was a total of 67 licensed premises - an increase of eight from the previous year.

“During the year, 311 special permissions to open out with normal licensing hours were granted.

“Of the 50 accused dealt with by the High Court, or the Sheriff Court with a jury, only one case was found not proven. Of the others 28 were imprisoned, eight put on probation, six fined and the others sent to various corrective institutes.”

Elsewhere, the headline read: “Once more into the breach”.

“Yet another car has gone through the frequently rebuilt dyke at the Fintalich corner on the Muthill to Crieff road.

“This time the accident, which happened on Sunday morning was caused when the driver lost control after a tyre punctured. No-one was hurt but the car - and the wall- suffered serious damage.”

And a new bar with a view opened in Crieff. The new cocktail lounge at the Victoria Hotel was situated on the first floor of the King Street premises and overlooked the rapidly diminishing railway station but also the Strath’s southern horizon.
