Top acts to play in Crieff

Organisers announce performers for Market Park event

Crieff Highland Gathering has secured three top Scottish music acts to perform for the big day on August 20.

The organisers have just announced that Tide Lines, Rollin Drones and Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton, the winning duo at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, will be their guests in the music tent in Market Park on what is one of the biggest days on the local social calendar.

Ian Stewart, now in his second year as the Gathering’s chairman, said: “The Glenturret Music Tent continues to go from strength to strength and this year is no different, with three top acts performing on the day. All three are another first for Crieff Highland Gathering.”

After many years involved with the event, Mr Stewart is aware of the high bar for music.

He told the Herald: “It’s not easy to continue bringing in the big names, but we are very pleased we’ve been able to keep up the high standard visitors to the Gathering have come to expect.”

Perthshire lads Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton recently played Perth Festival of the Arts with Treacherous Orchestra, a fired up folk outfit of which they were founder members.

They share musical roots from their days with the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band where as teens they were mentored by one of the most innovative pipers in the last 30 years, the late Gordon Duncan.

Scottish four-piece band Tide Lines, meanwhile, will also pitch up for Crieff Highland Gathering.

The band draws heavily on the traditional music of the West Highlands and Islands, but produce a highly eclectic sound driven by acoustic and electric guitars, drums and keyboards.

Their first single ‘Far Side of the World’, entered the UK download charts ahead of popular tracks by Coldplay and Beyoncé, as well as Adele’s ‘Hello’.

Taking the concept of ‘Bag Rock’ into an exciting new genre, Rollin Drones perform what’s known as ‘Pipe-Pop’.

Riding on the massive surge in appreciation of the bagpipes, the group is fronted by two championship winning pipers, blending guitar and piano into the mix.

The lead singer, Robert Robertson, was previously with big noise Skipnish.

“The acts lined up for the tent on Sunday, August 20, offer a varied sound which I guarantee will suit everyone’s taste,” added Mr Stewart.

He concluded: “Get your tickets now from our website www.crieffhighlandgathering.com and don’t forget your dancing shoes!”
