On a roll with toilet twinning

- Lynn Duke

Crieff Soroptimists are flushing out poverty.

And they’re inviting individuals, businesses and organisations to do the same by getting involved with toilet twinning.

The scheme is a simple, quirky way to solve a serious problem and save lives.

For a £ 60 donation, loos can be twinned with a latrine halfway around the world, in a country of your choosing.

For a £ 240 donation, people can create a link between their convenience of choice with a school block or toilets in a displacement camp.

The smallest room gets a certificate, complete with a photo and GPS coordinates of its counterpart so it can be looked up on the internet.

Members of the Crieff branch of Soroptimist International have decided to raise awareness of the sanitation and water issues in Nepal, specifically, and have been raising funds to twin toilets in the Himalayan country.

This week they presented a certificate at the public toilets in Crieff ’s James Square, which they have twinned with a latrine in Makawanpur, Nepal.

Donations help provide clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education.

The vital combination works together to prevent the spread of disease, makes communities healthier and people more able to reach their potential.

Crieff SI immediate past president Janice Wilson explained:“Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and it is still recovering from the disastrous 2015 earthquake.

“It is the women and children who carry the heaviest burden and a safe latrine can transform the entire community.

“A simple toilet will equip the community to educate, empower and enable its way out of poverty.

“The charity ‘Toilet Twinning’ also brings villagers together in workshops and plants the idea that change is possible. They are taught about the link between health and sanitation.”

Janice thanked the local community for helping Soroptimists raise funds throughout the year, enabling them to donate £890 – which will build many toilets in Nepal.

Janice has more certificates available for other latrines if any local businesses are interested in twinning their toilet. She can be contacted on 01764 652532.

Crieff’s twin toilet can be found in Tistung, Makawanpur, Nepal.

It is latrine number 60293, and is situated at: latitude 27.68669400 and longitude 85.07077800.
