Rotary at standstill despite pedal power
Rotarians were at a standstill in the Co- op car park on Saturday.
The Crieff club is getting behind the campaign to eradicate polio and, even though t h e y w e re going nowhere on their static bikes, they raised £ 180 and awareness of the incurable but vaccinepreventable disease.
Polio is a condition that attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis. It is potentially fatal, especially among children.
Rotary International is supporting a campaign called End Polio Now, which is trying to completely eradicate the disease by vaccinating all children living in vulnerable areas.
Rotarian Jim McConnell told the Herald: “We had an enjoyable day with our static bike ride in the Coop car park.
“The total money raised was £180, which will buy more than 1000 vaccines for children around the world to protect them against the risk of polio.”
Rotary president Chris Dowse thanked everyone who donated, adding: “The support on a dreich June day was greatly appreciated”.
The winner of the competition to guess how many miles the two static bikes travelled in five hours was nine-year-old Grace Russell, with 177 miles. Her mum said a shopping trip was being planned.
Rotary thanked the Coop for the use of the car park and Alistair Gourlay for his market stalls.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates has pledged up to 300 million dollars towards the effort to eradicate polio around the world.
