Bogus callers on the prowl in Strath

Strath resident gets two scam calls in one morning

- Lynn Duke

A Strath resident is warning others to be aware of phone scams doing the rounds this week after receiving two fraudulent calls in one morning.

Muthill’s Donald Hood was contacted by someone purporting to be from Sky TV on Wednesday, who informed him that he had been overcharged on his account and was due a rebate.

The caller asked for Donald by name - they knew his full name and address - and also mentioned four numbers on his bank card, which were wrong, and went on to ask for his sort code.

Donald told the Herald: “By this time I thought wait a minute there’s something not right here. If it was Sky they would have my details.”

Donald told the caller he wasn’t prepared to give any information and would be contacting the broadcasting company immediately. Sky told him they would always ask for a security password and would never ask for bank details if calling for any reason.

Donald added: “Sky also warned me I would probably get another call and right enough about an hour later I got another one. The first caller was a woman, the second a man and they both had foreign accents. Both numbers began with 008.

“They sounded plausible until they began asking for details and I think it would be easy for someone to be duped by them.

“I let the second one speak for a moment and then told him they were scammers and where to go before hanging up!

“I think these type of people are the scum of the earth, trying to rob people of their hard earned savings.”
