Square plans ‘thin end of the wedge’

“I sincerely hope he does not intend to do away with any of the trees,” commented Hon. Treasurer James Rae, expressing approval of the Road Convener’s proposal to extend the fountain area and to demolish the old Square Well at Crieff’s James Square.

At Crieff Town Council meeting, Roads and Lighting Convener Denis Cairns put forward his committee’s recommendation that the fountain area be extended to take in the old well, which would be removed and to square off the semi-circular shaped area. Police judge D.O. Maclean, seconding, said the Square was becoming increasingly popular and this would double the area available.

Treasurer Rae approved of the development, hoped the trees would not be removed but thought this might be the thin end of the wedge.

Dean of Guild McOwan was quite in favour of the platform being extended but said: “I am certainly against the Square Well being removed.” He felt it was an old landmark which should not be touched.

In sporting news, the annual school’s sailing regatta held on Loch Earn for the Brown Cup had to be called to a halt because of extremely strong winds. However, most of the programme was completed though conditions throughout were reported to be “pretty awful” and joint winners were Morrison’s Academy and Bell Baxter High School, Cupar.
