Pick up schedule for horticulturals
Help keep tradition going in Strathearn
It’s time to think about digging out your best begonias and voluptuous vegetables – and getting your creative juices flowing – for the area’s forthcoming horticultural shows.
The traditiona l f l o ra l exhibitions have progressed in recent years and, nowadays, the shows are not just about who has the greenest fingers.
There are still plenty of flower, fruit and veg categories to enter but the industrial classes have a variety of sections to suit all ages and abilities.
Cooking, baking, crafts, flower arranging and special competitions for children all feature.
First up are the shows in Comrie and Auchterarder, which both take place on August 26.
The Auchterarder Horticultural Society’s 151st showis staged in the Aytoun Hall. Doors open at 2pm with the official opening and presentation of prizes and trophies taking place at 4pm. All those living in Strathearn are eligible to enter.
Comrie’s show takes place in the White Church. Doors open at 2pm for viewing exhibits; prize giving is at 2.30pm and afternoon teas are available from 3pm.
Helen Stewart, chairperson of Comrie and District Horticultural Society, is encouraging entries and said the emphasis is on having fun.
She said: “We have a section to suit everyone. If you have never taken part in a show before, pick up a schedule and find out what’s on offer.
“We are here to have fun but also to keep the show going. It’s part of the village’s heritage and has been going for over 100 years.
“It’s also a chance to exchange ideas and see what others do. Schedules for the Comrie show are available from the White Church and Comrie Butchers.”
Likewise, Pauline Parr of Auchterarder Horticultural Society is encouraging entries Vegetable Garden, Best Complete Garden and Best Senior Citizens Garden. Judging takes place on Wednesday, August 2
“There are also prizes for residents and businesses on the main street of Auchterarder, which include first, second and third prizes for best flower tub, best window box, best hanging basket and best business floral display.
“You don’t need to enter - the judges will let you know if you’ve won. So if you live or work on the main street put out flower tubs, window boxes or hanging baskets and try for one of the prizes – plus think how great the street will look.”
Meanwhile, Strathearn Horticultural Society’s annual show takes place the following week on Saturday, September 2, in St Andrew’s Hall, Strathearn Terrace, Crieff.
Doors open at 1.30pm. The official opening and presentation of prizes is at 3pm.
