Other places to explore

Doors Open Days in Perthshire gets under way this weekend and there are a variety of Strath venues on the programme to be explored.

Copies of the 2017 programme are available from libraries, museums and VisitScotland Information Centres or you can download a digital copy from the Doors Open days website.

This year Doors Open Days in Perth and Kinross is being split across the first three weekends in September, with this Saturday and Sunday featuring Kinross-shire and Strathearn.

September 9 and 10 sees Highland and Eastern Perthshire buildings open their doors and the following weekend – September 16 and 17 – it’s the turn of Perth.

This is the first time that Perth and Kinross has spread Doors Open Days over multiple weekends and Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust (PKHT) is hoping it will offer even more opportunities to get in to buildings not normally accessible to the general public.

The Strath venues featured this weekend are Crieff’s Old St Michael’s Church; the Library of Innerpeffrey; Gleneagles House and St Mungo’s Chapel; Cultybraggan Camp; Tibbermore Church; Drummond Castle Keep; Comrie’s Earthquake House and Forteviot’s St Andrew’s Church.

A spokesperson said:“We have 52 venues participating this year, many of which are new or are returning after major refurbishment so there’s a strong chance that everyone will find something of interest in the programme.

“Over 2300 people visited the 40 buildings that took part last year. These ranged from A-listed buildings and spectacular castles to civic buildings in use every day. New to the programme for 2016 were Durn (headquarters of Bell Ingram land and estate agents); Perth Community Fire Station; Cleish Parish Church and Perth Crematorium. At many of the buildings, hosts provide guided tours, exhibitions and refreshments. Sometimes there are storytelling events, music and children’s activities.”
