News of British advance and Italian successes

-

By the British attack east of Langemarck, our line has been advanced on a front of more than 2000 yards astride the St Julian-Poelcappelle road.

Sir Douglas Haig mentions the valuable assistance rendered by our aviators in spite of rain and strong wind. Wet and stormy weather continues to hinder operations on the British front in France and Belgium.

On Thursday night it was announced that our line has been advanced slightly during the day on the Ypres front.

Prisoners taken by the French in their advance on Sunday numbered more than 1100. On Sunday night and Monday morning the enemy made a series of attacks on the Aisne front, but their efforts were thwarted by the vigilance of the French troops.

“The enemy will not be able to endure many more such blows,”says Sir Douglas Haig in a message congratulating the French troops on their success north of Verdun.

The Italian bulletin contained the important news of the capture of Monte Santo, which guards the east bank of the stronghold from which the Austrians were able to threaten Gorizia and the Middle Carso. In a statement regarding the Italian offensive General Cadorna says,“our final success is certain,“and describes the manoeuvre as one of the greatest attempted by any of the belligerents during the war. King George has telegraphed to the King of Italy heartiest congratulations on the splendid achievements of the Italian Army.
