Enjoy G&S classics in this community collaboration
Perth’s own Jambouree Cabaret Singers, along with a talented set of singers from the local community, will soon break into song in a lively concert of Gilbert and Sullivan classics.
Taking place on Sunday, September 10 at 7pm in St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church, the first half of the concert features excerpts from ‘Patience’, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’, ‘Iolanthe’, and ‘The Gondoliers’.
Making a special appearance will be a specially commissioned wooden gondola, built by Peter Mitchell in his Cherrybank squerro, or gondola construction yard.
After the interval, the audience become spectators in a Perth courtroom for a performance of the short comic opera, ‘Trial by Jury’, updated with Perthshire references by Alan Laing, who comperes the evening.
There will be lots of local references - to Tay Street, the Twa Tams, Dundee Law, Buckie Braes and Broughty Ferry.
The three principal parts are sung by Kenneth Maciver as the judge, Liam Bonthrone as the dastardly defendant, and Teenah Bee as the jilted bride, led up the aisle by the very realistic Reverend, John Murdoch.
Other main parts are sung by Cabaret Singers, ably supported by the chorus of community singers. Musical direction is, as ever, provided by Edna Auld.
The event is sponsored by the Perth and Kinross Creative Communities Fund, and with this in mind all singers have been welcomed without audition.
The aim, apart from providing an evening of great music, is to encourage even more interest in Gilbert and Sullivan, and to provide a template for further collaboration between the Cabaret Singers and the wider singing community.
Tickets are £5, including refreshments, and free for children of school age.
