Sweeping British triumph and great victories

-

Field -Marshal Haig has struck another blow at the enemy east of Ypres.

On Thursday morning our troops attacked on a wide front of over eight miles, being completely successful. The positions won are described by Sir Douglas as of great importance, and more than 3000 German prisoners had already reached the collecting stations when the report was despatched.

Our troops are in possession of the main ridge and Australians are well over the crest of the ridge five miles east of Ypres.

On Tuesday night Gentrode aerodrome was twice attacked by our airmen and several bombs were observed to burst on the sheds.

Our airmen also bombed Carnieres aerodrome. In air fighting six German machines were brought down and four driven down out of control.

On Monday night German aeroplanes attacked Dunkirk causing serious damage. As reprisals for this raid and one on Bar-le-Duc, French aviators made another attack on Stuttgart and also bombed Coblentz and Frankfurt on the Main.

The return for last week showing the results of the U-boat war on merchant shipping is the best the Admiralty has been able to issue. 13 vessels were sunk, two being under 1600 tons. The armoured cruiser Drake was torpedoed off the north coast of Ireland. She reached harbour but then sank. 14 lives were lost.

Moonlight raids by enemy aeroplanes continue to be made on the English coast.
