STRATH DUO CLAIM GOLD
Squash starlets wrap up year with title
Two young Strathearn squash players claimed the Girls’ Scottish Doubles title last weekend without losing a single game.
Crieff pair Maddie Orr and Lucy Murchie went unbeaten to claim the Girls’ Scottish Doubles Squash title in Glasgow on Sunday, December 17, winning all three of their round-robin matches and dropping just one game.
Their final match was a winner takes all encounter against Katie GregsonMacLeod and Orla Young, an incredibly tight three game contest which ended 9-11, 11-9. 11-9.
A delighted Maddie (16) said: “The first game of the final was okay but I probably shouldn’t have hit so many shots up the middle for Orla Young to play.
“We changed things in the second and third games and started hitting into the corner more which helped turn it around.
“I knew it was going to be close playing Orla and Katie so we are thrilled to win.”
Maddie, whose brother Ben was runner-up in the mixed doubles event alongside Lucy, added: “I have the Scottish Junior Open at the end of December and I am hoping to do well at that big event.
“I won there when I was 12 but, this year, in my age category it will be very competitive.
“I want to win my first match and see where it goes from there.”
The results marked a fantastic end to another successful year for both girls, with Lucy taking gold at the Welsh Junior Open U15s and both girls finishing as runners up in the Women’s Scottish Doubles Championships earlier in the year.
The Crieff trio also represented their country at the European Championships in Prague in the summer. Lucy and Ben also claimed third at U15s and fifth at U17s, respectively, at the Scottish Inter Regional Championships in April.
