Inspired by the seaside

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

A new solo exhibition has opened at a Crieff art gallery.

‘The Seaside’by Pam Carter features 40 new paintings and will be on show at The Strathearn Gallery until June 30.

Pam, one of the country’s best-known landscape painters, said her earliest memories were of seaside trips while growing up as a child in Africa, where she lived until the age of 13 before moving with her family to Scotland.

She explained:“We lived inland in Arusha and did not often go on holiday to the coast.

“But I clearly remember playing in the silvery sands with bucket and spade, taking shade under the coconut palm. “There’s something about the coast that draws us all back so it’s no wonder as an artist that I choose to paint what I really love.”

Nowadays, Pam has swapped African beaches for the more rugged, rocky shorelines and quaint cottages of Scotland

She makes regular trips to the islands to find inspiration for her work and recently visited Tiree, one of her favourite locations.

Pam continued:“I arrived off the early ferry to glorious sunshine. It lasted for three days.

“I enjoyed hunkering down with a wood-burning stove in a traditional black house on the The Green.”

She added:“I research the beaches in-depth – taking many photos from different angles and viewpoints, walking the beaches, dodging the incoming sea, finding the streams and rocky outcrops.

“I always seek out the cottages, thatches, felters and red roofs – the rows and clusters.

“I’ve seen the same views in sunshine and with dramatic skies, the colours of the landscape changing in the seasons.”

The Strathearn Gallery is situated on the town’s West High Street.
