MIKEY’S QUIRKY CASH EFFORT

Test of patience fundraiser

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

A big-hearted Strath fundraiser is aiming to prove patience really is a virtue this weekend.

Comrie’s Mikey Coull has come up with a novel idea in order to raise much-needed funds for Prostate Cancer UK, which researches the causes and supports people and their families affected by the condition.

Mikey, who works for the Shaky Village’s AB Gairns Contractors, will be dressed up as a nurse in the Comrie Hotel car park from 10am until 3pm on Saturday this week for what he describes as his “patience test”.

With sponsorship forms and collection buckets dotted around the village, people are invited to throw items at the 20- year- old, who will be seated and on a piece of tarpaulin.

And Mikey, who turns 21 on Sunday, explained he has challenged himself to remain stationary throughout what is likely to be a messy ordeal in aid of the good cause.

He told the Herald: “Two family members have been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the last year so I decided to do something to raise awareness and hopefully make some money for charity.

“I’m calling it a ‘patience test’. I’ve been asking everyone what’s the one thing they think I can’t do or that I struggle with and they’ve all said being patient – so I’m going to get people to throw things at me and I’m going to have to sit there and take it.

“Originally, I was going to do it in St Kessog’s Square but I thought with all the Christmas lights and things being up now I wouldn’t be able to do it.

“I used to work at the Comrie Hotel and they said I could do it outside in the car park. I’m going to be sitting on a piece of tarpaulin.”

Mikey continued: “Obviously nobody’s going to be allowed to throw anything that is likely to cause any injury but my mates are already coming up with a concoction that has stuff like eggs, milk, flour, beans and stuff in it – so I’m expecting it to be quite messy.

“I’m hoping it will be a fun day, though, and anyone is welcome to come along, make a donation and have a go.”

Mikey is no stranger to quirky charity events, having previously raised nearly £ 1000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust by walking from Comrie to Perth dressed as a traffic cone.

The 2017 fundraiser was prompted after the former Crieff High School pupil lost a friend to cancer the previous year.

And, ahead of his latest event, he said: “I’d like to thank my mum, Maggie, my dad, Ian, my sister, Steph and two good friends – Emma Rae and Callum Sinclair – who have all helped me organise this event and supported me, as well as June at the Comrie Hotel for use of the car park.

“I couldn’t have done it without their help.”
