Futsal fun at festival for high school pupils

-

Pupils from the Community School of Auchterarder were among those from Perth and Kinross who turned out in record number for a recent festival of futsal.

Players from across the region descended on Perth Bell’s Sports Centre to show off their skills and take part in competitive matches.

Blairgowrie High School, Perth Academy, Perth High, Perth Grammar, Bertha Park, Kinross and Breadalbane Academy were all also represented.

The event was organised by Perth Academy physical education teacher Michael Rodger, assisted by senior pupils.

He said: “We had over 100 pupils playing. It was the best attendance at this festival for many years.

“The pupils loved it and playing against other schools is what they want to be doing.

“This event has been happening for years but this is the first time the schools organised it themselves and it was almost not going to happen.

“It was the first time we had a girls’only section and this was a massive success. The S1-S3 girls had their own round of fixtures. There are two planned for each school year, so the next is in May and hopefully we get another good turnout.”

Plans are afoot for more sporting action of a similar nature as the term enters the new year.

Mr Rodger added:“Our next step is to try to develop the seven-a-side football in Perth and Kinross schools. The participation numbers in schools for football is always high but the number of games against other schools has fallen.

“We are trying to develop it in other ways, instead of the norm that has been done in previous years.”
