Street theatre offers journey through 300 year history

- LYNN DUKE

An exciting street theatre experience designed to bring history to life is coming to the Strath capital next month.

Tickets went on sale this week for ‘Fire & Folklore, Heroes & Villains’.

Locals and visitors will be taken on a virtual journey 300 years into the past during guided walks through Crieff from March 10 to 14.

The walks, which take place from 6-9pm, have been organised by Crieff Succeeds and will involve re-enactments and illuminations.

“Listen to tales from the town at a time when the Jacobites clashed with Redcoats, and drovers passing through from the Highlands caused havoc amongst the locals,” said Crieff Succeeds manager David McCann, “and watch onsite performances that are both fun and enlightening, spirited and inspirational.

“From the fearless Rob Roy McGregor to Bonny Prince Charlie and the retreat of the Jacobites when Crieff was burned to the ground, come and hear about the history of the town during this tumultuous time.”

The walk leaves from the meeting point in lower Leadenflower car park and culminates at James Square. Participants will be provided with a headset to hear the stories as their guide takes them through town, encountering various characters along the way.

Mr McCann added: “There will be lots of fun and exciting performances occurring as you pass through the town centre, telling of its Jacobite history and in particular the retreat from Sheriffmuir when Crieff was burned to the ground.

“This is a pilot event so tickets are limited but we hope we will sell out.

“It’s for all ages and we will have some fabulous lighting displays and projections onto Crieff’s historic buildings.

“It will be a great interactive experience for all the family and you will find out things about Crieff you never knew.”

Tickets are available online through the Visit Crieff website and from Strathearn Arts in Comrie Street.

And anyone who would like to be involved with ‘Fire & Folklore, Heroes & Villains’ can get in touch with Mr McCann at the Crieff Succeeds base in the Old Town Hall.

He said: “I’m also keen to hear from members of the community who would like to be involved in the walks as performers or as helpers.

“Come along and be a Jacobite or a Redcoat for the night - as a group or individuals.

“Email me at david.crieffsucceeds@gmail.com or pop in to the Crieff Succeeds office.”
