Firms will need to adapt as virus bites
Butchers, bakers and other food suppliers are rallying round to ensure that supplies are getting through during the coronavirus pandemic.
The effects of Covid-19 on small shops and businesses will be far-reaching and many local retailers are attempting to adapt to the change in circumstances by offering deliveries of essential items.
Shops that have been allowed to remain open following Monday night’s move into what is being widely referred to as ‘lockdown’ are following strict rules about distancing and some – such as pet food suppliers – are asking customers to pre-order items and collect them at the door.
Comrie butcher Murray Lauchlan said small businesses are recognising the need to adapt to the current circumstances.
He told the Herald: “Over the years a number of national and international issues have caused difficult times – two world wars, several cases of foot and mouth, stock market collapses – but probably nothing is going to have the same debilitating affect on individuals, communities and businesses as this current crisis.
“Unseen and seemingly uncontrollable, the effects so far are mild in comparison to what might come.”
Murray continued: “David Comrie & Son has survived since 1835.
“In my grandfather’s day deliveries were made by delivery boys on pedal bikes and vans with wind-up starting handles, and probably a horse and cart in the previous generation.
“Today, we operate a fully- equipped refrigerated van.
“Butchers have traditionally always done home deliveries.
“As an example, we deliver in Crieff six days-a-week and at times such as these we have seen so far a greater demand for this service.”
And Mr Lauchlan, who said he has been overwhelmed by offers of help with deliveries, said local businesses can also help allay fears over food rationing.
He added: “Working as we do year-round with regular suppliers, we feel in a strong position to overcome any mass panic over food availability.
“Whatever develops over the next few days and weeks we will be open to serve our loyal customers and communities as much as we are allowed to and is safe to do so.”
