Riches of past are a short walk away

therefore social distancing is not a problem but, because of the current Covid-19 restrictions, the free trail brochure will not be available on site until the campus and library reopen.

“The brochure will be widely available in the town once restrictions are relaxed.”

Ian added: “I would also highly recommend easy walks to the Old St Michael’s churchyard off Church Street, which includes a fine collection of old headstones and the footings of Crieff’s first parish school, which dates back to 1593.

“There’s also Burrell Square, which includes the superb sculptures of the Highland cattle.

“Like the archaeology trail, these sites have excellent information boards.

“When things ease we’ll also be able to enjoy Strathearn’s most significant historical site – Innerpeffray Library and Chapel – and the new heritage trail down to the Earn, as well as the excellent drovers exhibition at Crieff Visitor Centre.”

Ian said several other developments are in the pipeline to enhance the campus archaeology trail, including entering it into next year’s Scottish Civic Trust My Place awards scheme.

An application is to be made to the treasure trove unit at National Museums Scotland for the campus to house artefacts from the original excavations at the Pittentian Timber Circle site, designed to complement the other artefacts on display there.

He continued: “There is also an opportunity to consider the erection of a replica late prehistoric roundhouse. The site of one of these exists within the campus grounds.

“The massive archaeological footprint in the Broich Road area gives the town a great opportunity to further develop this resource for both residents and visitors alike.

“I am delighted to say that, after six years of effort to reach where we are today, the original team of academic and professional archaeologists, volunteers and funders is still on board and 100 per cent committed to these initiatives.

“Perhaps more importantly, the school’s senior pupils still remain immensely proud of and involved with the project since that wonderful day on May 29, 2014.”
