A ‘golden chance’ to help Crieff Speed limits and signage
permanent should they prove successful, and the community wish them to be retained.
“That matters so much, and I think it gives a golden chance for communities to express what they wish for the long-term.”
Explaining what is in the pipeline in more detail in terms of reducing speed limits, Cllr Donaldson continued: “In Comrie, apart from the existing 20mph trial speed limit area in Dalginross, what is being proposed will cover Drummond Street, Dundas Street, and School Road.
“In Crieff, the areas to be covered with the 20mph limit will be all of the High Street up to Leadenflower, Lodge Street, and part of Comrie Street, along with King Street down to Union Terrace, and then along.
“One of the areas I have asked constantly about is on the position with Transport Scotland and Bear Scotland. It seems clear that both bodies are supportive of the measures on the A85, both in Crieff and Comrie. That is good.”
He added: “These proposals on speed limits cover areas where there are often no footways and where pedestrians have to share the carriageway with vehicular traffic.
“However, other locations can be considered if requested by local communities, and I think that could then include St Fillans and Gilmerton.
“I’ve said before that I will keep a watchful eye on what happens, and still have to see specific proposals on cycling.
“We really do have to seize the chances offered by funding from Sustrans. We have got to view things differently going forward on footways and cycling.
“These temporary measures could in many cases become long-lasting. It really is a major opportunity to change things, but it has to be for the local community to push for that change, rather than change being imposed from above.”
Further discussions in relation to the proposals will be held with community councils, businesses and locals alike.
