PRIDE AS 2020 ENDS UNBEATEN

Youngsters round off the year with nine-goal drubbing

- SPORTS REPORTER

A talented youth football team from the Strath has ended the year on a high.

Crieff Juniors FC’s 2006 won 9-0 at home against Riverside on Sunday.

The result means the local lads have won all 12 of the fixtures they have played in 2020.

Split across parts of two seasons – both of which have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic – they have scored 84 goals and conceded just 18 in the process.

The good run of form saw them crowned league champions earlier in the year.

Coach Callum Ross has been at the helm of the 2006 team for the past nine years.

Reflecting on Sunday’s win, he said: “The hard work our boys put in every week at training shows in our stats.

“They are a top bunch of boys who are a pleasure to coach.

“They should get a special shout-out for winning all their games in 2020, scoring 84 and conceding 18.

“Sunday was a fantastic way for our boys to finish the year.

“Well done also to our goalkeeper Michal for his clean sheet after a good day of sweeping up any balls that found their way past his defence.”

Crieff opened the scoring after only a few minutes when a delivery from Fred found its way into the net after Billy made a run to the front post.

The home side made it 2-0 when Ethan skipped past the defender to finish well and continue a run which has seen him score in every game so far.

It was soon 3-0 when a nice head-flick from Jay released Harry, who jinked by several Riverside defenders before beating the keeper in what was a great individual goal.

Harry, who was a nuisance all day for the visiting defence, became provider and teed-up Fred who added to his side’s tally.

In the second half, Ethan registered another two goals to complete his hattrick.

Jay and Kyle, both impressive in the middle of the park throughout, increased the Crieff lead with a strike each.

Jay reacted first when the keeper could only parry the ball, while Kyle’s effort was a lovely low finish into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Fred rounded- off the scoring by smashing home what was his second of the day.

Callum concluded by thanking sponsors Easyglaze and Johnny Matthew Hay and Straw for their continued support.
