Tree planting in bid to improve environment
Local Soroptimists are getting behind the worldwide organisation’s Centenary Tree Project.
Members of Soroptimist International Crieff have joined forces with Crieff Community Trust and Comrie Development Trust to plant trees in the Strath.
SI Crieff ’s programme action officer, Janice Wilson, explained: “Saving trees was the first action by the newly- formed group of Soroptimists in 1921, and as our centenary year approaches, Soroptimists around the world are planting trees for a ‘Brilliant Future’.
“The United Nations’ development goal 15 seeks to ‘ Protect, Restore and Promote’ sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable managed forests, combat diversification and halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.
“Trees play an incredible role in combating climate chaos by removing planet- wrecking emissions from the air around us.
“Despite this, just 13 per cent of the UK’s total land area has tree cover – 19 per cent in Scotland – compared to an EU average of 35 per cent.”
Janice continued: “Members of Soroptimist International of Crieff have decided to take this project forward seeking the help of Jim Anderson and Crieff Community Trust, which is planting trees in Crieff’s Turretbank Wood.
“They asked for a Prunus Kanzan [a Flowering Cherry] and a Salix sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’ [Weeping Golden Willow].
“Both trees have now been planted and in years to come they will be a lovely focal point on a walk through the wood.
“We have also partnered with Comrie Development Trust and 100 trees will be planted in our name at Cultybraggan.”
