Community fund gives a local boost

- LYNN DUKE

Good causes acro s s Strathearn have benefitted from a funding boost of over £ 25,000 over the festive period.

And it’s all thanks to people shopping locally.

Since the Co-op’s community fund launched in September 2016 over £80,000 has been donated to local organisations.

The latest round of pay outs saw money from the Crieff Co-op’s fund go to 1743 ( Crieff ) Squadron Air Cadets, who received £5435.97 and SSF Transforming Lives, which was given £5260.30, with Brass Central Strathearn receiving an award to the tune of £5222.76.

Band leader Jim Wishart said: “The committee and members of Brass Central Strathearn would like to thank the manager and staff of the Co-op, Crieff along with their loyal customers for the financial support they have given the band over the past year.

“The sum of £5222.76 was raised and at this difficult time for brass bands has been very welcome.”

In the Lang Toon, Auchterarder Co-op’s fund went towards Neuro Central Auchterarder, which received £ 3922.77. Auchterarder Bloom Association was awarded £3698.45 and Auchterarder Scout Group received £3458.73.

And the list goes on.

Strathearn Building Bridges was donated £ 150 to spend on sweet treats for members, volunteers and committee members.

Crieff Primary School received

£250 towards buying new books for each pupil.

Santa’s Tractor event, which was a huge hit in Crieff Co-op’s car park the week before Christmas, was set up with a donation of £240 for the project.

Crieff Community Foodbank was given £250 towards food hampers which were donated to 12 families and individuals for Christmas.

In addition, the Strath capital store gave Muthill Primary School a huge supply of popcorn, sweets and juice for the pupils to enjoy at their end of

term movie night, and Crieff Primary School, St Dominic’s RC Primary School and Remake were donated Christmas hampers worth £60 each.

Christmas cards and boxes of mince pies were also given to the store’s 120- plus home delivery customers, and these were delivered personally by the Co-op elves.

The money is raised by Co- op customers who become members of the Co-op.

Every time a member buys Co-op branded products from food stores,

they earn a percentage reward for themselves with a further one per cent of the price going to a local good cause of their choice.

A spokesperson for the Co-op said: “Making a positive contribution and making great things happen locally has been at the heart of the Co-op’s purpose since 1844, and the local community fund is a good modern example of this.

“Along with our members, we’re proud to be making a difference to hundreds, if not thousands, of local lives.”
