Kiltwalk call made to help raise cash

Clock up miles for charity

- LYNN DUKE

The main thing is you have fun doing it, and you are helping support the local community Elizabeth Philip, Crieff Connexions

Strath residents are being encouraged to don some tartan, get out into the fresh air and cover some local miles with the Kiltwalk.

Volunteers at Crieff Connexions will be doing just that for the event – which is taking place nationally from April 23 to 25 – and they are urging others to do the same to raise money for the local charity based in the Strath capital’s High Street.

And you can choose how far to walk as the Connexions team have highlighted local routes to suit everyone.

“We have three different options for people to join in with us,” Elizabeth Philip, chair of Crieff Connexions, told

the Herald.

She continued: “Some of our team are doing the Kiltwalk and we thought it would be nice to extend it to anyone else that wants to do it.

“You can set your own challenge, or we have set three challenges you can take part in.

“There are various lengths so if you have children, for example, you could do the Wee Wander around MacRosty Park.

“You could give yourself a bit more of a challenge and take on the Big Stroll around Lady Mary’s Walk or, if you are up for a bigger challenge, you could do the Mighty Stride up the Knock – the long

way up.”

You can sign up to this year’s Kiltwalk at www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/events.

And, if you can’t take part, Crieff Connexions has set up a Just Giving page where people can sponsor Connexions regulars Jason and Allan, who will be taking on the Mighty Stride up the Knock in their kilts.

All the money raised will help to keep Crieff Connexions running.

The charity aims to provide a safe space from which to connect people with life opportunities and to other people, events, and services in Crieff.

Although the Connexions team would

love to hold a big event with lots of people coming together this is not possible under the current Covid restrictions.

In the interests of keeping everyone safe, they are recommending government guidelines be followed by anyone taking part.

And all money raised will be increased by 50 per cent through Kiltwalk and the Sir Tom Hunter Foundation.

Elizabeth added: “You can walk, jog, run or dance your way around these challenges.

“The main thing is you have fun doing it, and you are helping support the local community.”

Co m r i e community councillors have paid tribute to outgoing chair David Robertson and his wife Ann.

A recent reshuffle saw vice-chair Gillian Brock take up the post.

Mrs Brock said she is up for the challenge but is in no doubt she has “big boots to fill”.

She told the Herald: “When Davie decided to step down, it was an honour to step up from vice-chair to chair and serve my community.

“Nothing gives me greater pleasure than fighting for Comrie and seeing our issues come to fruition.

“Davie will be sadly missed on the community council having being involved for so long.

“He’s a stalwart of our village and I’ve big boots to fill.

“His love and dedication to Comrie is without question.

“I would also like to thank his wife, Ann, who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support Davie and our community.

“It is very often the case that many do so much without recognition and Ann certainly has been amazing.”

Sandra McRitchie is the temporary secretary of the statutory organisation.

She commented: “We want to acknowledge the years of work that Davie and Ann have done in support of the community.

“They have done a power of unseen work in the background as well as in Davie’s role on the community council.

“I don’t know how many burgers Ann will have flipped at the Hayride over the years!

“On a personal note, Davie was a great support for me when I was secretary previously and then chair for a while.

“Having never been on a community council before, I really appreciated having him there for advice and as a sounding board.

“I want to wish him all the best for his retirement although I’m sure his new wee granddaughter will have him running round in circles.”

Comrie Community Council has been meeting virtually via online platform Zoom. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend the monthly public meetings.
