Date set for cycling event after being called off last year

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

Organisers have confirmed a popular Strath cycling showpiece is set to return.

Last year’s Muthill Sportive was cancelled as a result of Covid-19 restrictions but those behind it this week announced the event is in the diary for Saturday, September 4, this year.

Hundreds of riders of all ages normally take part and will be given a chance to tackle one of four available routes, all of which start and finish from Muthill Parish Church.

The red Sportive route stretches for 70 miles, while the blue Challenge course is 34 miles, the yellow Easy route is 18 miles and the green Family distance is four miles.

The routes will be similar to successful previous editions of the event, although organisers have said precise details will be announced nearer the time as they may be subject to change as a result of Scottish Government social distancing requirements.

Funds raised through previous Sportives have supported the successful completion of phase one of the Muthill to Crieff cycle path, which was constructed in 2016.

The adjoining roads have also recently been designated walking and cycling- friendly, with a reduced speed limit and signage provided by Perth and Kinross Council.

A spokesperson explained proceeds from this year’s event will support development of the proposed 50-metre span bridge across the River Earn just south of Crieff, as well as maintaining the existing stretch of cycle path.

The event representative continued: “This will provide a safe cycling route to Crieff for all the community.

“We want people to help us celebrate the progress so far by joining us for the 2021 Muthill Sportive. This is an event for all cyclists. We wanted to have a Sportive distance but also to make it available for local families and beginners. We have four routes available which we will finalise them nearer the event.

“As with all events these days, we will need to monitor Covid restrictions nearer the time. For example, this might mean no indoor catering and the need to maintain social distancing etc.”

It’s £ 30 to enter the main Sportive and £20 for the Challenge route. The fee for the Easy route is £10 for those under 16 – who must be accompanied by an adult – and £15 for riders outwith that age bracket.

The family-orientated event is free to enter, although organisers have said they would appreciate any donations towards the community projects.

Entry fees include chipped timing, refreshments at the end and snacks and water both at the halfway spot and at various points along the routes.

The spokesperson added: “The majority of entry fee goes directly to the cycle path project.

“Funding for the Muthill to Crieff cycle path is coming from various grants but the village also has to raise a certain amount.”
