Egg-laying site plans feedback

- PAUL CARGILL

Consultants acting for poultry breeders who want to raise up to 16,000 birds on land near Kinkell Bridge are inviting the public to make their views known about the proposal.

SAC Consulting has set up a webpage containing further information about the proposal on their website on behalf of broiler breeders Aviagen as part of a preapplication public consultation.

The company says the online consultation has been arranged as due to current Covid-19 guidelines it is unable to hold a face-to-face event with locals as would be expected for such proposals under normal circumstances.

Information relating to the project now available on SAC Consulting’s website includes existing and proposed site layouts and a document setting out what studies will need to be undertaken to assess any potential environmental impacts arising from the development.

The document says the 16,000 birds Aviagen wish to store in sheds at Kinkell Bridge will not be reared “directly” for poultry meat “but for the production of fertile hatching eggs”.

It also says the new farm could end up employing up to 18 fulltime staff, a part-time cleaner and a resident full-time manager if it is eventually approved by Perth and Kinross Council through the planning process.

In a Proposal of Application Notice ( PAN) sent to PKC, SAC Consulting said: “The proposal is for the erection of four sheds and associated works for pedigree breeder laying chickens producing fertile hatching eggs.

“The site will be designed to accommodate 16,000 birds (4,000 per shed) on land that is an old derelict poultry farm.

“The site currently consists of three derelict poultry sheds that will be removed for the construction of four new sheds.

“In order to provide an opportunity for the public and local community to engage, find out more information and discuss the proposals in detail, an online public exhibition is taking place for a minimum period of 12 weeks covering the consultation period.”
