Council backs store’s recycling scheme

-

Strath residents have been encouraged to recycle their clean soft plastics at participating Coop stores.

Bread bags, plastic film lids on yoghurt pots/soft fruit punnets/ ready meals, crisp packets, pasta bags, chocolate wrappers and biscuit wrappers are currently barred from household recycling bins.

But now 10 Co-op stores across the Perth and Kinross Council catchment area, including those in Auchterarder and Crieff, have set up soft plastics recycling collection containers.

Ross Frogley, manager at the Bridgend store in Perth, explained: “Scrunch up the plastic item tightly – if it pings back, it’s a soft plastic. We accept all brands of soft plastic packaging – it just needs to be clean so that it can be recycled into something new.”

The most effective and hygienic way to rinse your soft plastics packaging is to submerge it in hot water in the kitchen sink and allow it to drip dry.

Councillor Angus Forbes, convener of Perth and Kinross Council’s environment and infrastructure committee, commented: “Since this recycling scheme has been introduced, I’ve had a carrier bag in our kitchen for collecting all the soft plastics.

“I’ve scrunched and rinsed the soft plastics packaging and then dropped off each full bag at my nearest Co-op during my weekly shop - and I’ve noticed a big decrease in the amount of waste in my kerbside general waste bin; it’s marvellous and so simple.”
