Repairs to start as revamp ramps up

- LYNN DUKE

Work to repair the surface of Comrie’s Legion Park has been scheduled to start in the next few weeks, according to Perth and Kinross Council.

Terri Bacon of Friends of Legion Park – the group campaigning for a major overhaul of the central recreation area in the village – recently met with PKC greenspace ranger Calum Bachell and Strathearn ward councillor Rhona Brock to explain the group’s vision.

Modern play equipment is top of the wish list for the community green space, with functional seating and a path round the football pitch also on the agenda.

The campaign arose following safety concerns surrounding the outdated play park and its deteriorating surface, which was creating trip hazards for young children.

The Friends are currently on a fundraising drive and their most recent event held in the park for Hallowe’en raised £465.

And they were delighted this week to receive their first approved funding award.

Terri told the Herald: “We got £8000 from the Perth and Kinross Community Investment Fund.

“This funding is going to be used to redesign the front of the park where all the bushes are. We will be looking at putting in a bench to pay respect to the British Legion who donated the park in the first place so we will be having a meeting soon to start the ball rolling on that section.

“We are currently consulting the community on what they would like to see in the park and have a survey out at the moment which we already have about 40 responses for.”

It will be a while before the Friends have secured enough funding to remodel the whole of the park but, meanwhile, Perth and Kinross Council will be making repairs to the dangerous areas.

A PKC spokesperson confirmed: “Our greenspace ranger met with the Friends of Legion Park and Councillor Rhona Brock

to discuss park improvements and it is encouraging to see such enthusiasm from the local community about it.

“While we are not yet in a position to programme park improvements, input from the community at this early stage will help ensure a great end result.

“We look forward to working closely with the Friends of Legion Park on this project.

“In the meantime, repairs to surfacing within the park have been scheduled for later this year.”
