Reuben’s lockdown art triumph

Strathalla­n student Reuben LaVallee has been named the ‘Junior Young Artist of the Year’in this year’s Perthshire Art Associatio­n (PAA) Annual Exhibition.

Reuben’s winning entry‘Different Slopes’was a scratchboa­rd piece depicting the things that he missed during lockdown and how he adapted to the pandemic.

In the S1-S3 age group the runner-up was Johanna Kwizda, from Glenalmond College.

The senior winner was Kim Paul, a pupil at Glenalmond with Perth High School’s Ciara Hull as runner-up.

In conjunctio­n with the Perthshire Art Associatio­n, the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull organises the annual Young Artist Competitio­n for the Perth area secondary schools.

It was based at the Fergusson Gallery this year with vouchers for winners donated by Specialist Crafts.

The 2021 competitio­n saw 103 pupil entries with seven out of eight local schools taking part.

Prizes were presented by Provost Dennis Melloy at the opening of the PAA Annual Exhibition on November 11.

Junior winner Reuben said:“I was delighted to receive the award for my piece and I’m proud to be part of the school’s entry to the competitio­n.”

Reuben shares his success with Strathalla­n School’s art department which has retained the title of‘Best Overall School’.

Head of art, Frank Glancy, said: “We are thrilled to have won two major titles in the Perthshire Art Associatio­n Annual Exhibition this year.

“To see Reuben win the junior category, amongst such a strong field of artwork, is testament to his hard work and vision.

“We are also delighted to have retained the title of best overall school for another year. We feel honoured.”

The PAA Annual Exhibition runs until December 12 at the free to visit Fergusson Gallery.
